An introduction to ACUMA Incorporated - what is ACUMA?
ACUMA Incorporated is the peak association representing higher education campus service providers in Australia and New Zealand.
The Association was originally incorporated in the State of New South Wales under the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 (NSW) ("the Act") and is a non-profit, non-shareholder corporation with limited liability. Business Registration details for ACUMA Incorporated can be viewed in the Australian Business Registry website at http://www.abr.gov.au.
ACUMA member organisations cover some 80% of Universities Australia members, providing services and facilities for the use of 89% of Australian university students.
The first conference held under the ACUMA banner took place in Newcastle in July 1995.
The aims and objectives of ACUMA are:
- Representing members’ interests to
- the higher education industry
- government
- business and
- the public;
- Delivering member services, programs and professional development;
- Research, member resources, standards, benchmarks, skills recognition and information dissemination; and
- Engaging students in the higher education sector in
- intellectual
- social
- cultural
- health and
- sporting activities.
The ACUMA Board consists of 9 members with at least one from each of the following regional groups:
- Eastern (New South Wales / Australian Capital Territory / New Zealand);
- Southern (Victoria / Tasmania);
- South/Western (South Australia / Western Australia); and
- Northern (Queensland / Northern Territory / Asia / Pacific Islands).
The organisation is managed by a Chief Executive Officer who is contracted to the organisation, with its office located in Launceston, Tasmania.
ACUMA has in place agreements with overseas and domestic organisations such as:
- ACUI (USA)
- NACAS (USA)
- AMSU (UK)
- AMICUSS-C (Canada)
- AUS - Australian University Sport
These are bodies with similar aims and objectives to ACUMA's. ACUMA is actively involved in developing the student services industry by promoting new initiatives. Industry standards, benchmarking and research are all high priorities.
